1994 saw the publication of Tekno. Digitaalisen tanssimusiikin historia, filosofia ja tulevaisuus ("Techno. The history, philosophy, and future of digital dance music", Aquarian Publications, 350 pages). It was an anthology book, edited by Sam Inkinen , with contributions from such people as Markku "Cosmo" Salmi (1950 - 2024), Bello Romano and several other writers. In the early 1990s, despite Finland undergoing a severe economic recession, spirit of the age could still be characterised as "techno optimism" which was reflected in many writings of the book. Tekno was allegedly the first full-length book written in Finnish on electronic dance music, rave and club culture. The book reflects the development of techno, house, ambient and related genres, up to the time of its publication, with emphasis on European, especially German, and British scenes, featuring also a perfunctory chapter dedicated to the Detroit techno pioneers. SÄHKÖ Bulb 2/1995 [Suomeksi] Sähkö Recordings is the only established ambient techno label in Finland. The label started its operations in January 1993 with Röntgen EP by Ø. Founded by Tommi Grönlund, Sähkö (“Electricity”), during its three years, has managed to gather some critical acclaim and a cult reputation, especially in England. You could say that the albums released by Sähkö belong to the ambient techno genre. These albums have often been described as abstract minimalism. However, these classifications make it difficult to get to grips with the specific nature of this music. SÄHKÖ Bulb 2/1995 [In English] Sähkö Recordings on ainoa vakiintunut ambientteknoa julkaiseva levymerkki Suomessa. Yhtiö aloitti toimintansa tammikuussa 1993 Ø:n ep:llä Röntgen. Tommi Grönlundin perustama Sähkö on kolmen vuotensa aikana ehtinyt kerätä kriitikkokehuja ja kulttimainetta etenkin Englannissa. Voinee sanoa Sähkön julkaisemien levyjen kuuluvan ambientteknon genreen. Usein näitä levyjä on kuvailtu abstraktiksi minimalismiksi. Finnish synthesizers In the 1960s and early 1970s Erkki Kurenniemi (1941-2017) designed and built such instruments as DIMI, DICO, Sähkökvartetti (the Electric Quartet), etc. Otherwise Finnish composers, musicians and producers utilised mostly imported US and European hardware, such as MiniMoog, Korg’s synths, etc. One of the Finnish synth pioneers was the musician Esa Kotilainen who imported his first MiniMoog from Germany in the early 1970s.
