Tekno (1994)
In the early 1990s, despite Finland undergoing a severe economic recession, spirit of the age could still be characterised as "techno optimism" which was reflected in many writings of the book. Tekno was allegedly the first full-length book written in Finnish on electronic dance music, rave and club culture. The book reflects the development of techno, house, ambient and related genres, up to the time of its publication, with emphasis on European, especially German, and British scenes, featuring also a perfunctory chapter dedicated to the Detroit techno pioneers. Finnish scene (ca. 1988 - 1994) gets an overview, also featuring a section of contemporary event and rave party puff pieces that were originally published in Helsinki's City tabloid.
Like Helsinki's ex magazine which came out approximately at the same time, Tekno established an important groundwork on how Finnish electronic music scene would be reported and written about in the coming years. Together with Hannu Puttonen's (1960 - 2023) techno documentary film Bring the Beat Back! that had already come out in 1992, these three different media works now offer an indispensable, time capsule-like view on the early-1990s scene and how it was received by those contemporaries who participated in it, with all the innate hopes, expectations and hype surrounding it.
Over the years, Tekno has managed to gather quite a cult reputation, never reprinted and now highly sought after from second-hand bookstores and other used book sellers.
