Rock is dead.” Bring the Beat Back! is a 1992 techno music documentary by Finnish director/screenwriter Hannu Puttonen (1960 - 2023), made in close collaboration with video artist Kimmo Sininen who provided visuals for the film. Talo, jonka Jaska jätti rakentamatta ("The house that Jack left unbuilt") is the alternative title for the film. With the length of 45 minutes, the documentary managed to capture the spirit of those heady days when the new electronic dance music culture was loaded with high hopes and expectations, for better or worse. The film had its Finnish premiere on 3 July 1992 at Illusion cinema in Helsinki. Soon afterwards it was shown on Finnish television (YLE TV1, 10 July 1992), with some five minutes left off from the original version. 1994 saw the publication of Tekno. Digitaalisen tanssimusiikin historia, filosofia ja tulevaisuus ("Techno. The history, philosophy, and future of digital dance music", Aquarian Publications, 350 pages). It was an anthology book, edited by Sam Inkinen , with contributions from such people as Markku "Cosmo" Salmi (1950 - 2024), Bello Romano and several other writers. In the early 1990s, despite Finland undergoing a severe economic recession, spirit of the age could still be characterised as "techno optimism" which was reflected in many writings of the book. Tekno was allegedly the first full-length book written in Finnish on electronic dance music, rave and club culture. The book reflects the development of techno, house, ambient and related genres, up to the time of its publication, with emphasis on European, especially German, and British scenes, featuring also a perfunctory chapter dedicated to the Detroit techno pioneers. General Electrix are Olli Koponen , a seasoned DJ familiar from Helsinki clubs, and producer Santtu XL , previously known from such monikers as his solo project, Xlter, and Rad (together with Koponen), all released on the duo’s earlier label, Pollination Records . General Electrix was launched in 2024. So far there has been four vinyl EPs on their own Secret Order label. Their sound could be described as old school electro, frequently backed by a sturdy breakbeat. I don't think it's too far-fetched to find some elements of acid techno or IDM there, either. Their debut, "Year of the Dragon" EP, was released on the 27th of January, 2025, on Secret Order label.
